The Voidborn Universe
The universe that Voidborn Series takes place in is inspired by a combination of Dungeons and Dragons and "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman. The idea is that there are an unlimited number of realms, some very similar, some vastly different. These realms are all stacked, in a sense, upon one another, accessible via many different means of magical or scientific natures.
That being said, each realm is home to many different species of creatures. Many you may be familiar with, many you may not. Some you might think you know, but in this world are slightly different than the creatures you've come to know. This page is dedicated to those species and their potential variations from the usual.
This is a list of the most common realms & creatures you will encounter in the Voidborn books, but there are many many more possibilities you may never meet.

Earth - The Mortal Realm
The “central” realm in a sense. All other realms are linked to this realm, meaning to travel between realms you must pass through the mortal plane first. There are some exceptions to this, but it typically takes powerful magic to bypass.

Humans
Your garden variety humans. They are the majority population in the mortal plane, but lack magic or any physical enhancements. Human's do however make up for their lack of magic with their craftiness and advanced technology. Lycans While commonly referred to as “werewolves” the Lycans of this universe are slightly different. They are not constricted to shifting under the full moon. They have the capability to shift at any time, however they are weakest in daylight. Their strength at night varies depending on the phase of the moon, being strongest under the full moon. Their wolf form takes on a more upright humanoid appearance (Think the werewolves from Skyrim) Demi-Gods The gods themselves may not be native to the mortal realm but they had no issue taking advantage of it. The demi-gods are the children of Gods and mortal creatures (not always humans). Their powers and appearances greatly vary depending on the gods who sired them. Some look no different than a human, while others may have more animalistic features. Witches Witches might look like your average human, but they are actually a species of their own. They have a natural ability to connect with the magic of the world and bend it to their will. All witches are female, and will typically mate with human male but their female offspring will always have the affinity for magic. Most witches will have some form of specialty magic on top of general magic affinity. |
Astaria - The Fae Realm
The Fae Realm is divided into 5 territories, each ruled by a different race of Fae. For centuries there has been a strained peace between the races, put in place for the necessity of their survival. However, most the races do not get along and conflict is often barely avoided.

Faerie Kingdom
Home of fairies, druids, pixies, little folk, & forest spirits. The Faerie kingdom revels in the power of nature and their magic is primarily ritualistic. The Faerie kingdom is located in the heart of a vast forest. Anyone seeking the kingdom would need a guide lest they be lost to the labyrinth of the forest. Elven Kingdom Home of the elves, who often consider themselves the true rulers of the Fae realm due to their magic being inherent and all-encompassing. Located in a vast mountain range, the elves have allied themselves with the great dragons that make the heart of the mountain their homes. Kingdom of the Deep Home to merfolk, sirens, kelpies, and other sea dwelling creatures. The magic of this kingdom varies from creature to creature, but the Sirens are most well known and feared for the magic of their voices and cruel nature. While the Merfolk rule this undersea kingdom, the Sirens hold most of the power. Shifter Kingdom While considered a kingdom, the shifters have no king or queen or leader in any sense. They are nomadic and rely on the power of their packs or tribes. Their magic is spiritual, along with being able to shift between a humanoid form and their animal form. Wolven shifters are often mistaken for Earthen werewolves, but they are in fact different. Vampyr Kingdom Contrary to popular belief, the vampyr race did not originate from the Mortal plane. They are the only fae who can create new fae from non-fae creatures. While human stories make it seem like vampyr need blood to survive, in reality they do not. The consumption of blood is necessary for their magic as they are Hemomancers but not required to sustain their life force. |

Elves
The elves are the oldest species in Astaria. They claim that all other Fae species evolved from them, but this fact has never been proven. They wield powerful magic and have superior strength and speed, paired with heightened senses. Elves have a mostly humanoid appearance, thought they are most often tall and slender, with long pointed ears. Fae Fae are close relatives to the Elves with the key difference being that their magic is tied to the elements. Most of the lesser species of the Fae realm see them as equals to the Elves, though the Elves will tell you otherwise. Fae share appearance with elves in that they are humanoid with pointed ears, but the key difference is their addition of wings. The style of wings varies and is dependent on their elemental affinity. Dragons Dragons typically don’t leave the Fae realm unless under dire circumstances. They prefer their mountains and the company of elves, who they deem the only creatures close to their equals. They are capable of many feats of magic no other species can manage and can take a more humanoid form when deaing with the elves or other species. Shifters While native to the Fae realm, shifters are quite common in the mortal realm, among others, and commonly mistaken for Lycian. Shifters normally have a human like appearance, but are capable of shifting into their given animal form. When a shifter is born their innate magic reached out for a spirit. The animal spirit who chooses to reach back and become that shifters guardian, gives them their form. Few shifters who came to Earth prior to the realms closing remain. The majority of Earths shifters were born there and thus take on animal forms native to Earth. Vampyr In the mortal realm they are more commonly known as vampires, but due to the centuries of hiding, the lore surrounding them is highly inaccurate. Vampyr are actually native to the Fae realm. They are the only species of Fae who spawn new Vampyr by creation rather than reproduction. Like common lore, they do require blood, but not as a sustenance for live. Vampyr are hemomancers and require blood to use their magic. They have extended lives, superior strength, the ability to transform into a large bat-like creature, and though they cannot reproduce, they mate for life. They prefer darkness to sunlight, but sunlight is not lethal to them, only discomforting. Harpies The harpies are a race of humanoid-avian like creatures. Their upper body resembles that of a human, while their legs resemble that of a bird. They also possess large feathery wings that allow them to fly. Their magic is most commonly based in wind and earth elements and many of their kind posess great healing abilities. |
Pandemonium - The Demon Realm
Probably the most commonly known realm due to demons' love of tormenting humanity. While often referred to in religious text, this is nothing more than a human-made construct. The demon realm actually has no connection or relation to any religious affiliation. It is, however, one of many realms where souls travel to after their time in the mortal realm. Unlike the Fae Realm, Hell is one large kingdom, divided into 5 lesser courts with the Fallen City as its central capital. The great demon Lucifer rules over all from the Fallen City, while his most trusted generals, the four horsemen, oversee 4 of the courts. The 5th court was given to Lucifer’s lover Lillith and is the home of the Lilu demons (incubi and succubi).
- First court - Ruled by Lillith. Home of the Lilu. Court of Temptation.
- Second Court: - Ruled by the horseman Death. Oversees arrival of and assigns arriving souls to their courts. Court of Limbo for the unplaceable souls.
- Third Court:- Ruled by the horseman War. Demon armies of hell. Protectors of the realm.
- Fourth Court:- Ruled by the horseman Pestilence. The court of hellish science. Specializes in plagues and poisons.
- Fifth Court- Ruled by the Horseman Famine. Court of torture. The worst of souls end up in this court.
Paradise - The Realm of Light
Paradise, often referred to as the realm of the gods, is the world where the majority of the known "gods" of the mortal realm hail from. While not actually gods, the beings of Paradise just happen to be extremely powerful creatures of magic. Due to their uncharted potential, they have chosen to cut themselves off from the other realms.

Unicorns
While technically from Paradise, Unicorns once thrived in the mortal realm. When Paradise chose to shut itself off from the other realms the Unicorns returned home. All, that is, except one. Unicorns have a myriad of powers besides their horse-like camoflauge. They can shapeshift, communicate telepathically, and surprisingly have a keen intuition for battle. Unlike popular belief, not all unicorns are white, most are actually black or shades of gray. A pure white unicorn is actually quite rare. |
